About Bournemouth School
Bournemouth School is an over-subscribed grammar school for boys (1116 on roll, with 366 in the sixth form, 68 of whom are girls) serving Bournemouth and the surrounding area. The school's published admission number for Year 7 entry is 150. A number of students join us in Year 12 from other local schools (68 in September 2014, 40 of whom are girls).
The school converted to become an academy on 1st September 2011. Shortly afterwards, it was inspected by Ofsted and judged to be outstanding. In the resulting report the House system was cited as the "heart and soul" of the school, and continues to be a defining characteristic of the school. Our sixth form is a fully integrated part of the school, with students embracing leadership opportunities and serving as excellent role models for younger students.
The school's ethos is built upon the traditional values of hard work, discipline, smart appearance and respect, but we also seek to embrace emerging technologies to improve the quality of teaching and learning and to ensure that our students are adequately equipped for life in the 21st century. Outstanding academic results are achieved through a partnership between our students, highly qualified staff and supportive parents.
Bournemouth School is one of very few maintained schools in the United Kingdom that has a Combined Cadet Force (CCF). We have Army, Navy and RAF sections and students who choose to join have wonderful opportunities to travel, sail, fly and take part in outdoor activities. Membership of our CCF is also offered to girls from Bournemouth School for Girls (BSG). The school also has a RN accredited Sea-Scout Group, which affords students further opportunities to learn skills related to the outdoor life. Students from both the CCF and Scouts compete in events such as the annual Ten Tors expedition, and have the opportunity to participate in overseas expeditions and regional, national and international events. The school is also a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Directly Licensed Centre. The DofE Award scheme is open to all students in Year 10 and above.
We offer students an extensive extra-curricular provision (sport, music, scouts, CCF, DofE, drama, theatre club, etc.). The Sir David English Sports Centre (SDEC) is open to members of the school and local community from 7 am to 10 pm daily. The all weather pitches benefit the school's students and a number of local clubs.
